My Dream

So he liked all your Instagram pictures, followed you and left a heart emoji on a picture .

He did all these to get your attention. One of those fuck boys- you insinuated .

He sent a message you ignored ,you checked his page and realized ,he had all you wanted from a Man, you replied Hi. He lives in Canada and you in Nigeria you’d use all night to chat with him then miss lectures .

He’d tell you this and that just to win your heart .Your grades in school worsen as semesters pass .

He’d tell you to concentrate but your priority was him .The thought of how he looks, stroke your head everyday .

You’d facetime him every day, tag him on all your pictures, let your friends know you have bobo in Canada.

As time pass, you guys argue about little issues .

Your sarcasm was no joke to him anymore ,you’d beg day and night for his attention Your days begin to fly now, and yet each one of them is stretched by a renewed expectation, swollen with his silence and the memories of the private experiences you had imagined with him.

And when he replies, you feel ecstatic .It was a long conversation, he told you he’s coming to Nigeria, it sounds so strange, you weren’t happy , he promised to get you things you told him you wanted for your birthday and you were comfortable with that.

You told all your friends ‘my bobo from Canada is coming to Nigeria ‘. Two weeks later he arrived in his father’s house .He described the place to you, anxiously you went to see him .On your arrival ,you saw a statute which depict the face of a famous Yoruba traditional ruler .

Now you doubted some things about him .You called to let him know you around ,He saw you and was daze by your beauty ,he called your name and you went wild ‘omg is this you ‘ I thought you were tall, thick, fair – your perfect words mocked his looks .

Only the two of you in the house and you sat on his father’s couch hoping you visit him someday. You talk to him like you knew him for ages. So Dayo why did you come back, I came for business he said. You make small talk; Internet, Nepa situation ice cream and the statue at the front of his house .

You don’t talk about the big issues – you were scared he’d get angry. And then you two are kissing on his father’s couch, the sex was weird. He woke you up by 5am to leave that he has something important to do .He gave you the stuff he got for you and told you I love you but you didn’t tell him I love you . You felt he treated you like a whore.

You got back to your hostel and your friends asked you, how it went? You’d tell them lies to avoid being mocked. For two weeks he didn’t call or text.

You try calling he didn’t pick. You were worried. You’d cry cry and cry some more. You thought of things that didn’t’ matter cause you were impatient ;’probably he used me’ you concluded .You changed your number, you blocked him on all your social platforms.

Two months later, Dayo a prince, had just concluded the first phase of his coronation as king, the later part was a search for a wife. Dayo’s intention was pure and his queen was you. He tried his best to reach you but you played yourself and played him too.

You read hard for your last examination in school. In few days you’d be a Graduate.

The thought of being successful was the main thing now. Dayo had only 7 days more to get a wife unless, he might lose the crown to another fellow. Finally Dayo knew your school. On the eve to your convocation Dayo showed up .

You were puzzled – you shouted go away bastard. He tried his best to explain but you didn’t want to listen. But as you walked away he yelled this kind words you like to hear, that pulls your heart from your chest to your lips you’d want to kiss him. You understood the whole thing.

He asked you the address of your house, to meet your parent. He got there met your parent and told them everything your parent were filled with joy, your mother imagined the Aso ebi and Aso oke she and her daughter will wear that day.

Eventually Dayo brought a wife back home. Quick preparations were made for the marriage. The night to your marriage you stared at the moon and imagine if this was really happening.

You thank your stars. You lacked the right words to describe the way you felt. And hope the next day you become a woman with a fine prospect of happiness .You went sleep.

Above your head there is a sword of a shocking yellow, dividing blade of skies that will form water in a couple of minutes.

You heard voices, sounds of drum pa pa pa Sade, Sade wake up .You’d be late for your matriculation-

Your Mother said. You found out it was all a dream. You realize you are crying.
